What a waste!
Published 1 year, 3 months ago in Making News.I was watching a show on “free to air” TV this week and was amazed at what I saw. Australian custom officers were doing their job and stopping fraudulant clothing containers from entering the country. The 1000’s of garments that they seized where driven to a tip and buried under ground! Surely, in the day and age of “Make Poverty History” banners and concerts, the Australian government can step in and freight these goods to third world countries who are in desperate need of these perfectly good garments, or even closer to home they could be dealt out to the thousands of homeless Australians freezing through a harsh winter. It looks like corporate pride going too far. A great waste and total lack of initiative by all parties involved. What do you think?

I agree, it’s shameful the amount of waste that goes on in the world.
I have heard the argument that if companies give away excess food, clothes etc to the homeless that there will then be no incentive for them to not be homeless… but even if that were so, the companies could donate the clothes to charity op shops where they can be sold at low prices and pass on the benefit to needy people through the charitable organisations. Also clothes would definitely come in handy in the event of natural disasters.
I agree and maybe if that happened it might make those makers of the real brands consider donating some of their overpriced clothing too.
apalling !!
I can remember when Customs held an Auction for such articles so I admit to being a little sceptical about whether this is what really happens to this stuff……Yes, we’re encouraged to recycle everything in this time of throw away mentality and yet perfectly good products are destroyed. Do we really believe this happens??
Sounds like beaurocratic red tape at its best. I wonder how many similar instances we don’t get to see happen every day. You would think it would be easy for someone to find some funding or sponsorship to send the clothes to East Timor, or any of a huge number of places in need - or, as you say, simply passed on to help those in need right here. I agree, what a huge and disgusting waste! (I am incensed and I didn’t even see it!)
That’s crazy! I need some new clothes! hehe
I agree with you completely ! While I understand that the garments are fraudulent and cannot be legally sold, I really can’t see why they can’t be given to those in desperate need. Very sad…
Apparently it depends on the company whose copyright has been infringed what happens to the goods. Unfortunately in the past, some of this stuff has been donated to charities to send overseas to be given away, but somewhere along the line they get sold for profit and the intended recipients don’t get anything. It is a tough call for companies trying to do the right thing when you get scammers ripping everyone off.
